Brighton became famous as a seaside resort town during the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was popularly referred to as ‘London by the Sea’. The modern city retains much of this legacy and is still a bustling visitor destination.

Both received their charters in the 20th century, though the University of Brighton can trace its origins to 1859.
The University of Sussex is one of the top 20 universities in the UK and is part of the Russell Group of leading UK research universities. The University of Brighton is also ranked within the top 100 universities in the UK and is particularly renowned for the quality of its art and design work.

Brighton has a thriving, diverse economy with a particularly strong technology sector – the city is home to many games studios, digital marketing companies and website developers. American Express has a major presence in Brighton, lending its name to the 30,666-capacity stadium where Brighton and Hove Albion FC play their football.
