The School of Arts and Humanities provides a supportive, high-quality learning environment with excellent teaching and research.

We offer a range of postgraduate degrees in contemporary, real-world subjects which combine academic rigour with excellent skills preparation for work or further study.

Our journalism courses are accredited by the BJTC (British Journalism Training council) and NCTJ (National Council for Training of Journalists).

We also offer the opportunity to undertake MPhil and PhD research degrees within our vibrant research community.

ACADEMIC STRENGTHS

The School has an international reputation for its research, and is particularly strong in the highly rated Research Assessment Exercise units of English; communication, culture and media; and French.

We host a number of specialist research centres and a range of journals and book series are also produced in the School.

We have an active programme of visiting speakers, including public figures, leading academics and professional experts, which aim to give students a broader perspective on their subjects. Recent speakers have included Tony Benn (politician), Kate Adie (journalist) and David Lodge (author).

FACILITIES

Our nationally recognised Graduate School provides a base for all postgraduate and research students within the School. It offers one of the country’s benchmark research training programmes, incorporating well-established staff / student research seminars, a research methods training course, reading groups and thesis writing groups.

Postgraduate students in the School have access to dedicated facilities, such as common rooms and quiet study areas.

Our suite of journalism courses are taught in the Centre for Broadcasting & Journalism, giving students plenty of opportunities for hands on experience and ensures that they learn both the academic and practical skills which provide the training essential to build a successful journalism career.
