Lui Qi is a Research Assistant for the University of Salford working on a European project researching an intelligent hoc for wireless sensor networks. He graduated with a PhD in Data Telecommunications and Networks.
"I wanted to come and study in the UK and on asking an agent they reccomended the University of Salford. After learning English for a year at Salford I was motivated by a lecturer to continue my research at the University. I alos looked at the quality of teh research and noticed in was rated 6*.
I really enjoyed studying at Salford. It is a flexible environment to work in, it is easy to concentrate and keep on track with work; having interim assessments helped my greatly as I didn't lose the purpose of my research.
I have also learned a great deal from teamwork and lecutres. The facilities at Salford were better than expected - they were excellent!"
Being at Salford gives you the opportunity to meet students from all over the world with diverse cultural backgrounds and new interesting ideas. Working with them allowed me to expand my knowledge and experience.
The best part of the course is the modules which cover the area of safety, health & environment in an interesting way, making study pleasant! In particular, most of them apply theory into practice, teaching me how to deal in a real situation. That part makes them extremely useful for my career.
I would definitely recommend this course - it gave me the opportunity to get the job that I was hoping for, right after my graduation (working at MDA Management Ltd where I am a health and safety coordinator.)
I chose Salford because the course is recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health. Further. I am a supporter of Manchester United and the West Indies was due to play a test match at Old Trafford during my study year!
The course gave me a greater overview of Occupational safety & Health and also prepared me for the managerial position I now hold. It also provided me with the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the world which would not have been possible if I studied at home.
I was so pleased with the course that based on my recommendation two of my colleagues later undertook their postgraduate studies there.
On my return home to Trinidad & Tobago, I assisted in getting the state to proclaim the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2004 (as amended). I was later appointed the Head of the Occupational Safety and Health Unit of the Ministry of Labour which is the precursor body to form the OS&H Agency under the new legislation. I am currently involved in directing, controlling and training 32 enforcement inspectors.
Coming to the UK as a student has opened up a whole new world, full of unique opportunities, memorable moments and life-changing experiences for me. The great thing about this University is its wide range of different cultures. The facilities available were excellent. Fantastic libraries, great laboratories and excellent facilities provided on- and off-campus!
The course provides a vast range of subjects from drug design and green biotechnology to skills in entrepreneurship giving us an edge over other life science graduates.
Moreover, the staff were extremely friendly and approachable which was very important and useful for me as an international student and no matter what stage of study I was at, I always found someone on hand to provide me with help, guidance and advice.
Come with an open mind and enjoy every bit of the course as each lesson comes with something new to learn and you will be amazed at the endless exciting prospects the course has in store for you.
